Kolam & Rangoli

I have become recently fascinated with the art of Kolam and Rangoli, which is often found on thresholds across India. Although they look chalk drawings, they are actually made with a special type of flour (historically rice flour, but commercial types have become popular). The craft is passed down through generations of women, and is comprised of beautiful, creative, usually symmetrical shapes. I love the idea of temporary art - that it is done just because it is beautiful to do, and not because it will be permanently displayed. There must be great artistic freedom in that concept! Though the artwork is said to be done to please the gods, I believe my God created all art, and so He too can be pleased by interest in this craft.
